Keeping WordPress core, themes, and plugins updated is crucial for security and performance. However, updates can sometimes cause conflicts. Here is how to update safely on BurjHost.
The Safe Update Checklist:
Step 1: Backup First (Crucial!)
Before any update, create a full backup of your site. (See Article 49 on how to back up WordPress). If something breaks, you can restore it immediately.
Step 2: Update Plugins and Themes
-
Go to Dashboard > Updates.
-
You will see a list of available updates.
-
Select the plugins and themes you want to update.
-
Click the "Update Plugins" or "Update Themes" button.
-
After updating, test your site (click around, check forms) to ensure everything works.
Step 3: Update WordPress Core
-
When a new WordPress version is available, you will see a banner at the top of your dashboard.
-
Click "Please update now."
-
Click the "Update Now" button.
-
WordPress will enter maintenance mode, update the files, and then bring your site back online.
Pro Tip: Enable automatic updates for minor security releases, but manually review major updates on a staging site if you have complex custom code.
