Why Are My DNS Changes Not Updating? Print

You changed your nameservers or DNS records, but hours later, you still see the old site or get errors. This is almost always due to DNS propagation.

What is Propagation?
When you make DNS changes, this information needs to spread across the entire internet. Every ISP (Internet Service Provider) around the world caches (stores) DNS information to make browsing faster. Updating all these caches takes time.

How Long Does It Take?

  • Typical Time: 24 to 48 hours.

  • Sometimes Faster: Many ISPs update within a few hours.

  • Sometimes Slower: Some networks hold onto old records for the full 48 hours.

What You Can Do:

1. Be Patient (Mostly)
If it has been less than 24 hours, the most likely answer is to wait. Your site is live and working for some people, just not for you yet.

2. Clear Your Local Cache
Your own computer may have stored the old DNS data.

  • Windows: Open Command Prompt and type ipconfig /flushdns

  • Mac: Open Terminal and type sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder

  • Chrome Browser: Clear your browsing data (cached images and files).

3. Check Different Networks

  • Try accessing your site using your mobile phone data (turn WiFi off). If it works on data but not on your home WiFi, it confirms your home ISP is the one with outdated cache.

4. Verify Your Changes
Use online tools like "WhatsMyDNS.net" . Enter your domain. It will check DNS servers worldwide and show you if your changes have propagated globally yet.
